I have had the privilege to listen to the stories of many birth parents as they face the most difficult decision in their life. These birth parents have incredible courage, strength, and love.
Many times, birth parents are seen by the church and the world in a very negative way. I have heard many comments about how birth parents just “give up” their child, as though they are abandoning, disowning, or throwing away their baby. How opposite this is from what is truly taking place, as the birth parents are really giving to their baby, by laying their own lives down for the sake of their child, so he or she will have a better life. These birth parents, whether they know Jesus or not, are representing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in what I believe to be one of the most real and tangible ways on earth.
Through my work with birth parents, I have learned the importance of listening to others. Every adoption is different, every birth parent has a story and has wounds that they are carrying, every human deserves the opportunity to be listened to and loved. There is so much power in kindness and a willingness to be quiet and listen, especially to those who are so often judged and ridiculed. We are not able to do these things on our own. We are not able to have this powerful kindness or unending love. But Jesus is able, and gives us the ability to extend his love and kindness toward others. These birth parents are broken, much like those who Jesus loved and spent time with during his life on earth. I think these are the people He has called us to love as the church and body of Christ, don’t you?
I have seen God work miracles through adoption. I have worked with birth mothers who are completely against adoption, come to the realization that it is the best option for their own life and the life of their child. I have seen birth fathers that at first refuse to consent to adoption soften and let their walls down, sharing their own wounds and brokenness and realizing they want something more for their child. I have seen God unite adoptive families and birth families together at a specific time, for specific purposes, and in powerful ways. These are all miracles God has provided in order for His children to be taken care of and drawn closer to Him.
